new master bedroom bookshelf…

By in Master Bedroom, Scavenged Stuff

A couple weekends ago I found two great angled bookshelves at a yard sale. Yesterday I painted one of them to put it in my bedroom. I went to Lowes and bought two cans of Krylon White Satin spray paint and a drop-cloth and set up shop in my garage. A couple of coats of paint later I have a great new bookshelf for my bedroom! Now I have a place to put books I’m currently reading besides piling them up on my nightstand! The other bookshelf I’m using in my office, but I haven’t decided what color I want to paint it yet so I’m using it “as is” for now.

a blast from our groovy past…

By in Life, Me

Anyone who knows me knows I love the kitschy and bizarre! I came across this YouTube video of Raquel Welch today doing a very groovy space dance and thought I would share it!

Out of this world, isn’t it?

garage sale finds…

By in Scavenged Stuff

Last weekend was Potsdam’s Garage Sale Weekend! I tried to stay away from a lot of them, as I’m trying not to bring a whole lot of new stuff into the house right now (I need to have my own garage sale), but I couldn’t resist a few things! While I was helping out at the annual Potsdam Humane Society sale, I found an awesome bronze vase with a Chinese dragon on the side, and I just had to bring it home! I also found 4 glass flowers. I wasn’t going to get them at first, but the more I looked at them the more fun I thought they were. I think they might look nice displayed singly in a vase here and there in places that could use a little pop of color. My last find was the best one though- two awesome angle sided bookshelves! They are in great condition and just need a coat of paint; I haven’t decided what color yet. I got them both for $20! I’m going to replace the crappy prefab bookshelf in my office with one, and I might put the other in either my bedroom or the guest room upstairs! I love a good garage sale!

the forgotten wall…

By in Upstairs Bathroom, Upstairs Hallway

It’s hard for me to believe that I did my bedroom and upstairs hallway remodel two summers ago! What’s even harder to believe is there is still a section of the hallway that I haven’t painted yet. It consists of a bump-out that was constructed when the upstairs bathroom was put in and some built in cabinets in the hallway. The whole thing was covered in hideous wallpaper when I first bought the house and one of the first things I did was pull it off. I have been trying to decide what to do with it and I believe I am going to paint the whole thing the same color as the rest of the walls in the hallway. I’m trying to decide if I should paint the pocket door and cabinet doors the wall color or the brighter white that I have used on the trim. I’m not going to paint all of the trim on it bright white as I think it will make it look too busy. What do you think?

stairs and downstairs hallway…

By in Downstairs Hallway, Stairs

I have been considering painting my stairs, stairwell and downstairs hallway for a while now. My original plan had been to rip down all the paneling in the stairwell and hallway like I did with my upstairs hallway, but it is in good condition, and I’m not sure I feel like dealing with what could possibly be underneath the paneling right now. I think it would like really nice painted white like the upstairs hallway. I would paint the top trim a brighter white along the window trim and windowsill. The rest of the paneling trim I will paint the same soft white as the walls. I will eventually be adding a baseboard when I redo the floor. I think I want to paint the stairs white as well. I need to figure out what kind of paint to use. I’m wondering if I want to paint the handrails black or possibly bright white as well? One thing I do know, this is going to be a lot of caulking!

front porch and patio…

By in Exterior, Front Porch, Patio

Thanks to Donald Murray II of Rockwalls & Creative Stonework in Hopkinton NY (315-842-6556) my front porch and patio has been completely rehabbed! Starting in November 2009 I had the bottom front steps rebuilt, then in April I had the top steps and railing supports redone and the patio cleaned and broken stones replaced. It came out beautifully and looks like new! It is a really nice place to do my grilling and sit out and relax at night.

Pardon the appearance of some of my plants, we had a freak hailstorm a few weeks ago that shredded a lot of them!

front patio…

By in Exterior, Patio

So last November I had my front steps redone. They were crumbling apart and very dangerous. A man named Donald Murray II who owns a business called Rockwalls & Creative Stonework in Hopkinton NY did the work for me and the results were excellent! His number is (315) 842-6556. You can see the results here!

This spring I had him come back to fix up the upper patio and top steps as well as the railing bases. Once again the results were excellent! He removed all of the grime off of the stones with an acid bath, then chiseled out the stones that were beyond repair and any loose mortar. He made all new railing bases out of cement and sandstone. Below are some progress photos I took that show the replacement of rotten stones. I’ll post finished photos soon!

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Fixing Adam’s House will be undergoing a small redesign soon (mostly to make things easier for me in terms of posting pics and what-not) so hang in there- more posts coming your way!

EDIT: The new design is done ! Thank you so much Anna from Door Sixteen!

hey there!

By in Life, Me

Well, what can I say? The past year had a few bumps in the road so I had to step back from the blog and take a fresh look at things. Sometimes it is just good to try to gain a new perspective on what is going on in life before you can move forward.

Well, I’m back and ready to move forward! I’m resuming “Fixing Adam’s House” both online and off! I just paid a visit the the lovely Anna at Door Sixteen and was truly inspired by what she has accomplished with her home in the last 5 years since I have seen it in person! Seeing it in person is just breathtaking and I feel ready to continue making my home the place I know it can be!

EDIT: I just realized this post is exactly 9 months to the day of my last post! That seems kind of fitting.

front steps finished…

By in Exterior, Front Porch

My front steps are done and I am thrilled with how they came out! I’m no longer embarrassed by how the front of my house looks and I’m no longer worried someone will hurt themselves. I hired a man named Donald Murray II who owns a business called Rockwalls & Creative Stonework in Hopkinton NY. His number is (315)842-6556 and I would highly recommend him. He did a wonderful job for a very fair price and in a brief amount of time. I especially love what he did with the railing anchors. Before they were just concrete squares but now the match the rest of the porch! I had him take a look at the rest of the porch for any other structural issues/general wear and also some issues with some of my railings and give me another estimate. I will probably be having him come back this spring!
