catching up…

By in Exterior, Lawn & Garden, Life

Where does the time go? I can’t believe we are in the last month of the year. I don’t really like how fast the time goes but there isn’t much I can go about except go with the flow and try to make the best of the time I have.

I’ve been away from my blog for a few weeks dealing with computer issues, some travel, a bad sidewalk fall and preparing my home for the winter, not necessarily in that order. I thought it was time I started catching up on here.

I have a decent sized plot of land that my house sits on, approximately 80′ x 200′. Not huge, but certainly enough. One of the nice things about this house when I bought it was all of the perennials the former owner had planted all around the house in various flower beds. At one time the former owner had been president of the Potsdam Garden Club, so she knew what she was doing! I love flowers, but until I bought this house I had no gardening experience. I still don’t have a lot, but thankfully my mom does so she has been helping me maintain what have here since I bought the house and she also helped me make some changes and some improvements. Some of those pictures can be seen here. Overall I enjoy working with my flowers and gardens and enjoy the sense of accomplishment throughout the spring and summer when everything is in bloom.

One of the things I don’t enjoy is fall cleanup. Since I have so many flowers, I have a lot I have to cut back every fall. I have a lot of trees too, and so do my neighbors, so that results in a lot of leaves. Combine this with the fact that I am working full time in the fall and we usually have very rainy falls here and it leaves me under the gun trying to get it all accomplished. Usually I don’t get much done which results in a lot of work in the spring. I was lucky this year though and managed to get most of it done before the snow came! I got all but two small gardens cut back and cleaned out. I was also able to get my whole lawn perimeter raked out in my own, fussy, clean-freak way. I’ll admit that I hired out the rest of the leaf removal and consider myself lucky to be able to do so. My mom was nice enough to help me get my front porch and patio cleaned off (flower pots, grill, furniture).

Because of all this I have a lot less to do in the spring compared to other years which means I’ll enjoy the blooming and growth even more!

I have mixed feelings about it. I wish if we were going to have it that we had enough so I could go cross-country skiing. I’m sure in a few weeks we will have enough here though.

Uh oh, this reminds that my balconies are in dire need of a clean-up. All my summer flowers and veggies are dead by now, and the winter flowers are still waiting to be planted. I am WAY behind…
