dining room ideas

By in Anna Says..., Dining Room, Inspiration & Ideas

There is so much reddish-brown wood in the dining room (chairs, tables, moldings, floor, sideboard) that the room looks much darker, older, and more somber than I imagine you want it to.

Here’s what I suggest doing:
1. Paint ALL of the trim and the wall below the chair rail bright white (semigloss).
2. Paint the wall above the chair rail a very soft, very pale blue (flat). Keep the ceiling white.
3. Add a rug under the table so you have some contrast between the it and the floor.
4. Replace the ceiling fixture with something more contemporary and reflective (chrome and glass).
5. Add a table runner in a fun, casual print.
6. Take the curtains off of the door and window. That’s the back of the house, right?
7. Remove all excess pieces of furniture (plant stands, corner shelves, etc.) and edit what’s on display in the sideboard. I’d love to see some pale yellow, blue, and white ceramics on that piece, since it’s so dark.

It’s taken me forever to comment here but I really like these ideas. I really like the idea of the blue and white, although I’m a little nervous about painting the woodwork but I think it would look great. I actually want to replace the window trim and baseboards to match the upstairs where it is original. So maybe when I do that I’ll paint as well!
